What's Wrong With Busing People From Neighbouring Countries To Register?

Deputy Communications Director of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Fred Agbenyo says there is nothing wrong with busing people from neighbouring countries to participate in the registration and voting process.

According to Mr Agbenyo, a wealthy person can decide to convey people of Ghanaian origin from countries like Togo and Cote d’Ivoire to Ghana to register.

Speaking on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, he questioned why Ghanaian nationals from countries like America, Germany and other European countries who have the financial wherewithal to travel home to Ghana, are allowed to register and vote but not those from Togo or Cote d’Ivoire.

To him, "when somebody boards a plane from Germany, from America…anywhere else in the world and alight at Kotoka to Ghana to register, we tend to say oh some Ghanaians have come home to register. I think we need to be very [very] with honest this issue. If I don’t need a plane to move to my country to come and register, what is wrong if I reside in Togo and I am Ghanaian, so I come to Ghana to register?

“If I have money and we are doing registration, and if there are some NDC people in Cote D’Ivoire; why don’t I hire a bus for them to come and vote? What law have i violated? What law says we shouldn’t assist Ghanaians who live outside of the country to come back home and register?

He further admonished politicians to assist the Electoral Commission, stating that though the Commission’s performance cannot be said to be 100 percent; it however deserves an acknowledgement of better performance in the limited registration process.
