Project Citizen, a programme designed to promote civic education in schools, has so far enrolled a total of 4,079 students from junior and senior high schools in the country to educate them on responsible citizenship. The programme, which started in 2006 on pilot basis with 574 students from 20 selected schools in the Northern and Greater Accra Regions, was initiated and sponsored by the Centre for Civic Education of the United States of America. Mrs Fanny Kumah, National Coordinator of the Programme, in an interview with newsmen at Wa on Tuesday, said the programme, which was being implemented by the National Commission for Civic Education and Civitas Ghana has taught the beneficiaries how to find alternative policies and solutions to problems in their schools. The students were also being taught �Critical Thinking� and how to analyze policies to see why they were not working and find ways of drawing government�s attention to them. �For instance the students through the guidance of their teachers have found out that certain policies that have been in existence since 1960 were no more relevant,� she stated. She said most of the students knew about the institutions of state such as the local government structures but they did not know that they all formed part of government and should therefore not be treated in isolation. Mrs Kumah said the project has also brought on board five special schools made up of two schools for the blind including the Wa School for the Blind and three schools for the deaf to meet the needs of these special children. In line with that, she said a Braille Text Book has been developed under the project for the blind pupils.
