Muslim Group Calls For More Inclusion

The Islamic Centre for Virtue and Social Development (ICVISOD), a Muslim think-tank that champions social and political inclusion and development, has advocated for equal opportunities for Muslims in high-office positions in the country.

The group, at a press conference, identified itself with calls by the running mate for the New Patriotic Party, Dr Bawumia, for greater participation of Muslims in the highest decision-making processes of the country.

“We are shoved and roused from our taciturn position to react quickly to an alleged stoking of religious sentiments by Dr Bawumia in an already tense atmosphere  which everyone in our society seeks to  mitigate.”

According to the group, the statement made by the New Patriotic Party running mate was harmless since it was in tune with the 1992 Fourth Republican Constitution of participatory democracy.

At a press conference in Accra, the Executive Director, ICVISOD, Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong emphasised that it is the position of the group that Dr Bawumia was harmlessly stating his party’s position on pluralistic collaboration.

He said the NPP, in the view of ICVISOD, has been consistent with its chosen policy of achieving greater participatory democracy by pluralism in governance from ex-President Kufuor and now the duo of Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia.

Alhaji Frimpong noted that unlike the NPP, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had deliberately denied Muslims their due, particularly Muslim running mates.

“Who said all northerners are Muslims and southerners are Christians? Does that mean NDC could not find a Muslim Fante? Where General Smith, a charismatic defence Minister then was and many others,” he bemoaned.
