Afoko Grilled Over Cooked Party Minutes

Paul Afoko, the suspended National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), yesterday had a hectic time proving the authenticity of supposed minutes of a disciplinary committee meeting he tendered to quash his suspension from the party.

According to Mr. Afoko, members of the committee were approved and appointed by the National Council during that meeting.

The suspended NPP chairman had attached purported minutes of a National Council meeting on July 16, 2014 signed by one Edward Tetteh, who is not a member of the Council.

The General Secretary has the mandate to record all meetings of the National Council, but Afoko’s alleged minutes showed that the General Secretary was not the one who prepared them.

Already, Kwabena Agyepong, a suspended General Secretary of the NPP, had filed a witness statement in the court claiming to be the recorder of the purported minutes tendered by Afoko, contrary to the evidence on Afoko’s own document.

Under cross-examination in an Accra Human Rights Court, presided over by Justice Anthony Yeboah, Godfred Yeboah Dame, lawyer for the NPP, insisted the minutes had been fabricated.

He argued that the document was prepared by a person, who was not a member of the National Council, adding that the letter had not been authenticated by the party.

Earlier, the trial judge had chided both parties for failing to stick to matters set out for trial.

He disclosed that the trial would unduly prolong if the parties continue to discuss tangential issues during cross-examination.

Hearing continues on May 17.

Mr. Afoko, who was represented by lawyer Osafo Boabeng, sued the NPP and its acting national chairman, Freddie Blay after he was suspended indefinitely in October last year by the party.

The party’s disciplinary committee had recommended his suspension from the NPP after a petition filed by two members of the party.
