B/A: Police Re-Arrest Injured Suspect Who Ran Away From Hospital

The Brong Ahafo Police Command has re-arrested a suspect, Kwaku Yeboah, 22, who escaped from his hospital bed while on admission at the Sunyani Regional Hospital under police guard almost a fortnight ago.

Yeboah was arrested on May 2, 2016 at about 07:30 pm in an unconscious state when he had been brutalized by an angry mob after he and an accomplice (also on the run), allegedly attacked and robbed a trader in her shop at gun-point, snatching away a handbag containing GH₵2,500.00 at Ohene Djan, a suburb of Abesim, near Sunyani.

The robbers in the course of absconding with the booty on motor bikes were spotted by an 18 year old young man who raised the alarm which attracted neighbours.

After a hot chase by the mob, Yeboah run out of luck and was captured whilst his other accomplice managed to escape. The mob pounced on him and the severe beating rendered him unconscious.

This was when the police responding to an emergency call came in to arrest the suspect.

Due to his condition, Yeboah was rushed to Sunyani Regional Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

He was handcuffed and put on a 24 hour Police guard while still on admission but managed to escape from the Hospital on Thursday May 5, 2016 at about 11:00 pm, leaving the handcuff hanging on the bed.

The Police Constable who was guarding the suspect was given a 10-day ultimatum to find the suspected robber, or would be charged for negligence.

Speaking to Kasapa News the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Christopher Tawiah disclosed that the suspect was arrested at his hide out on Monday by a team of police personnel which included the police officer who was guarding the suspect.

He added that the suspect was processed for court few hours after he was arrested where he pleaded guilty to the offence. The court has set 20th May for sentencing.

ASP Christopher Tawiah, explained that the capture of the suspect does not make the police constable a free person.

“He has not been pardoned; the police administration will soon launch a service inquiry into his conduct to establish whether it was negligence or dereliction of duty that led to the suspects escape. He just can’t go a free man.”
