Workers of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) last Thursday night issued an ultimatum to their Board to ensure that crude oil is available for the refinery to refine by the end of this September 2009 (today) or face the wrath of the entire labour force.
The anger of the TOR workers which resulted in their issuing the threat came when in an unusual characteristic fashion, the entire Board was moved to the durbar grounds at its premises, in an attempt to get to the bottom of its predicaments. The workers, speaking through their leadership at the canteen building where the durbar took place, sent the hall vibrating occasionally when in unison, they gave their leaders thunderous applause for placing the cards of the workers on the table.
Breathing fire and brimstone, the workers asked government to reshuffle the board and include technocrats on it. They held that little action is being seen at the only oil refinery in the country because most of the board members are ignorant of how the oil industry operates.
Currently, the 9-member, Board is chaired by Mr. Eric Okai, a banker. Other members are Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, Omanhene of Ogua Traditional Area; Hon, Alfred Agbesi, MP for Ashiaman; Nana Mprah Besemuna III, Krachwura; Mr. E.M Commodore Mensah, an Agriculturist and a businessman and Ms. Elizabeth Adjei Mensah, a legal practitioner.
The rest are Kazawura Yahaha; Alhaji A.A. Abubakar, a businessman and Dr. Kwame Ampofo, acting Managing Director. They also called on the Board to institute disciplinary actions against the management members whose act of commission and omission has forced the refinery to go down on its knees. The Daily Post newspaper intelligence has gathered pieces of information which reveals how some Oil Marketing Companies including Fraga Oil have contributed to the near collapse of TOR.
