Teacher Sentenced To Five Years Imprisonment For Defrauding

A 49-year-old teacher, Justice Agamba has been sentenced to five years imprisonment by a Bolgatanga Circuit Court for fraud and forgery.

Mr. Agamba, a tutor and Assistant Headmaster in charge of administration of the Community Vocational Training School in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region was convicted on all 37 charges brought against him by the prosecutor.

He pleaded not guilty to two counts of defrauding by false pretence and forgery, but the court presided over by Justice Malcolm Bedzrah found him guilty on the charges after he failed to convince the court in his defense.

Narrating the facts to the court, prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, Kofi Oduro Amponsah said the convict in January 2014 defrauded 52 graduates from various tertiary institutions.

The graduates, who were desperately searching for jobs, were defrauded to a tune of GHC73, 000 on the pretext of assisting them to get a job at the Department of Community Development in Navrongo.

The prosecutor added each of the victims was asked by the convict to pay a cash sum of GHC1, 500 to bribe the National Acting Director for the Department of Community Development, Mr. Paul Avorka, to facilitate their employment.

According to him, the victims after realizing that their appointment letters were long overdue, massed up at the Navrongo Police Station and lodged a complaint to the police leading to the arrest of the teacher.

The court Judge, Mr. Bedzrah, after sentencing Mr. Agamba also ordered him to pay an amount of GHC49, 800 to the victims.
