The National House of Chiefs has warned chiefs across the country to desist from openly endorsing presidential candidates ahead of the elections.

Some chiefs in the Northern and Brong Ahafo regions have in recent times endorsed President John Dramani Mahama ahead of the November polls.

But the President of the National House of Chiefs, Prof. Naa Nabila, has condemned the move, arguing that the practice violates the constitution.

He has therefore called on chiefs not to engage in the act as candidates begin to visit their communities.

“It is not right for any chief to openly endorse any candidate to the extent of giving the percentage of votes. We all want to have peace and we should all promote peace and we should not let politics divide us.”

Some chiefs in some regions have reportedly thrown caution to the wind and ignored the law that bars them from meddling in politics actively as it is often the case when elections are approaching.

In 2015, the Chief of Sunyani, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri  gave the assurance that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will secure 80 per cent of the total votes in the Brong-Ahafo Region in the November polls.

The chief of Kukurantumi in the Eastern Region is reported to have assured President Mahama of 50 per cent of the total votes in the region.
