Paul Acquah Out....Paa Kwesi Berko In

Paa Kwesi Berko Amissah-Arthur, who was appointed as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) by President John Evans Atta Mills last month, starts official work at the Central Bank today, Thursday, October 01, 2009. The out-going Governor of BoG, Dr Paul Acquah briefed him about current happenings at the Central Bank and handed over notes to him last week. Before commencing official duties today, Mr Amissah-Arthur, on economist, had gone through various documents at the Central Bank. He was also presented at the press conference of Monetary Police Committee (MPC) last week and according to sources, took part in the MPC meeting, which assessed the health of the economy for the last quarter and made projections for the final quarter of this year. Dr Acquah�s dedication and hard work at the BoG won him several awards including �The Banker� organised Central Bank Governor of Africa award twice in succession. Economists, Analysts and Market watchers would keenly monitor the new Governor as he starts work today. Several financial and banking laws such as the Foreign Exchange law, Act 723(2006) and the Credit Reporting law Act 726 (2005) were introduced by Dr Acquah in his eight years as head of the Central Bank. Mr. Amissah-Arthur, who is a prot�g� of former Finance Minister, Dr Kwesi Botchway, was a former Deputy Minister of Finance during the first term of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He was also the Deputy Chairman of the transition team on economy. During his involvement in the structural adjustment programme that was applauded by the World Bank and other development partners, Mr Amissah-Arthur also accumulated a great deal of experience which enabled him to move into a more lucrative international consultancy business; thus making him of the wealthiest people in the country.
