Soldiers Use Man's Eyes As Punching Bag Over Phone

A 34-year-old phone repairer has been beaten up by two soldiers for misplacing a mobile phone.

The soldiers, according to Class News’ regional correspondent William Jalula, repeatedly punched Nashiru Yahaya, a resident of Sawaba, a community close to the Bolgatanga police station, in the eyes until they turned bloody. The punishment was for allegedly losing a phone he was asked to unlock.

The soldiers are said to be among the troops recently deployed in the troubled capital to quell recurring clashes between two factions in a long-standing chieftaincy conflict.

Narrating his ordeal to William Jalula, Yaya Nashiru said a lady by name Halima handed her Samsung galaxy phone to him for unlocking, but unfortunately, he lost the mobile phone. He said he bought the same model of mobile phone to replace the missing phone, but Halima declined it.

“When I brought the phone, I met her sitting down with the soldiers. They asked me where the phone was and I told them to exercise patience, and brought out the new phone I had bought. I handed it over to one soldier, he took the phone and used it to beat my eyes”, he said.

Yaya said he felt threatened for his life after his mother approached Halima over the matter and was warned that her son’s ordeal was just the tip of the iceberg.

The incident comes weeks after two army officers in Tamale were found guilty for assaulting a teenager into coma for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.
