A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cautioned the party to forget about chalking victory in the 2016 election if the government fails to solve the current problem with the electricity billing in the country.
Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the party, Anthony Nukpenu predicted on Adom FM’s Morning Show, ‘Dwaso Nsem’ Thursday that the party would be doomed in the impending elections if they fail to sell their message to the ‘down trodden’ who are the group affected most by the high billing system of the ECG.
“Our votes are with the down trodden and they need power to run their barbershops etc…it’s shameful we are plunging the nation into this state…I cannot see how I can convince people to vote for the NDC if this thing continues…,” he said.
Ghanaians have been up in arms against the government and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over outrageous electricity bills served them by the company.
The new billing system implemented by the electricity distribution company has led to the collapse of several businesses with a large section of Ghanaians complaining that they have either cut down drastically or stopped using electricity in their homes.
Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr last week lamented on the same show that outrageous billing was leading to the collapse of his printing business.
“How can electricity bill that was around Ghs 300 move to Ghs 1200, when I complained, it jumped to Ghs1800; while we were still deliberating on this, it shot up to Ghs2000 something. The bill that was brought last month was just too serious, it was 6000 Ghana cedis, I don’t even know whether to cry or to laugh about this…,” he lamented.
“Since birth, I have never seen a meter like that, herh, it is very dangerous…now, they tell me it is even impossible to top up credit on the meter, you have to wait for the credit to get finished and I simply can’t comprehend it,” he said.
Mr Pratt, according to the Greater Accra Regional Orgnaiser of the NDC, is not alone as the masses are also complaining bitterly about the entire problem.
He has therefore called on President John Mahama and the national leadership of the NDC to sit up and meet with the managers of the ECG to find a lasting solution to the problem if the NDC hopes to retain power in the 2016 elections.
“Our votes are at the down trodden, these people need power for their work but because of this high billing, their businesses are collapsing…I'm calling on national leadership to sit with the President to solve this problem before we go into the 2016 elections…,” he urged.
He maintained that he and several NDC executives would not have the will to go out and campaign for the party if the ECG billing system remains unsolved.
“I don’t see how I can go out and convince these people to vote for us if this billing system is not solved…,” he stated.
