NDC Meets NCCE

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), gave audience to a six-member delegation of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to explore ways of promoting civic and voter education for the impending general elections.

The General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, led the NDC team in the meeting with the NCCE delegation led by its Deputy Chairman, Mr. Samuel Akuamoah.

This was contained in a statement signed by the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.

The meeting, which was at the instance of the NCCE, is part of the Commission’s programme meant to engage all registered political parties and stakeholders to elicit input into the Commission’s programs.

The meeting agreed that there should be an in-depth research to identify issues that affect the well-being of the citizenry. That can be factored into the activities of the NCCE towards promoting good citizenship. The youth and women groups form the core segment of the NCCE’s education program as conduit to engender peace before, during and after elections.

The NDC urged the NCCE to assert its role as a state institution charged by the constitution in its engagement in civic education prior to the elections, and, educate the citizenry to reduce the incidence of spoilt ballots. The NCCE should not create space to allow civil society organizations to usurp their function.

The NDC was of the opinion that civil society’s work in civic education can only be a supplementary to that of the NCCE and not the other way round.

The NDC urged Ghana’s development partners who are interested in supporting the country’s elections to direct their funding to the NCCE instead of civil society organizations who are not accountable to anybody in Ghana, not even parliament.
