A former National President of the Mathematical Association of Ghana, Miss Adwoa Nkrumah, has advised parents and students to be wary of the proliferation of unapproved Mathematics textbooks on the market.
She said many parents and teachers bought textbooks with concepts that did not correspond with the syllabus of the Ghana Education Service (GES), and that affected the teaching and learning of Mathematics at the basic and secondary levels of education.
Miss Nkrumah was speaking at the annual in-service training for kindergarten and lower primary teachers in Cape Coast in the Central Region.
She said many students failed in Mathematics at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) as a result of the weak foundation they had built through the use of unapproved textbooks sold on the market.
“The concepts found in the unapproved Mathematics textbooks make the children learn different things,” she said.
A qualified teacher
Speaking on the theme, “Building a solid foundation for study of Mathematics”, the Western Regional Director of Education, Miss Enyonam Afi Amafugah, advised teachers to be committed to their career to encourage students and pupils to develop interest in the subjects they teach.
According to her, motivation by teachers would help change the negative attitude towards Mathematics. She called on the government and corporate bodies to help build a stronger foundation for the study of Mathematics at the lower level of education.
