A total of 570 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses have been grounded due to various mechanical faults.

The buses, representing a little over 50% of the 1,070 fleet of buses are currently packed at the MMT’s bus terminal at Kaneshie.

This was revealed when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Roads and Transport paid a working visit to the offices of the State transport firm, Monday.

The Committee, Kasapafmonline.com learnt, is not happy about the stunning revelation and has therefore decided to probe the issue.

A member of the Committee, Samuel Ayepaye said has requested for a comprehensive report on the faulty buses to enable make informed decision over the matter.

“We went there and had discussions with the management, the MD was present. Actually, they painted a very nice picture and showed clearly that there is a green light ahead but there are certain things that we must get up as a country – to fight for to see MMT on their feet”.

“For instance, they claim having 1,079 buses. The statistics show that more than 50% of those busses are not on the road whether being permanently parked or partially parked or inactive or active. If you put them together, every day they route 594 buses which means that out of the 1,079 they have more than 500 buses that are not on the road because of one issue or another and that is worrying”.

“They also talked about flooding in their main yard in Kaneshie. Some of the buses are flooded. In terms of purchasing of spare parts, they have to struggle at the harbor. These are some of things that will not help Metro Mass Transit”, he noted.
