Human Rights Lawyer, Francis Xavier Sosu wants the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to come up with appropriate recommendations that seek to address recent cases of discrimination that has rocked students of Nurses and Midwifery Training schools in the country.

CHRAJ has ordered the Nursing and midwifery Council to register all affected pregnant students in the upcoming external licensing examination in August who were barred from sitting the exams.

The directive comes after three student nurses at the Mampong Nurses and Midwifery Training school in the Ashanti region were prevented from registering for the examination because they were pregnant.

Human Rights Lawyer, Mr Francis Xavier-Sosu filed a petition and brought the matter to the doorstep of CHRAJ praying for urgent intervention for the affected students, hence the relief given to the affected students.

But Lawyer Sosu maintains the problem is gaining root in the system as some students in other institutions like Jirapa have made an SOS call to him complaining of a similar discrimination against them.

“We’re hoping that by this directive of CHRAJ, at least there will be some immediate steps taken to get them registered while CHRAJ perhaps makes appropriate recommendations to redress the problem moving forward,” he said in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.
