Aboom Communities In Cape Coast Benefit From Healthy Nutrition Education

Nestlé Nido has expanded the Nido Nutrition School Day to promote Aboom Communities in Cape Coast in the Central Region Public education plays an important role in promoting good nutrition and healthy lifestyle that contribute to the development of children.

As part of its commitment to Nutrition, Health and Wellness through its Nido brand, Nestlé Ghana has organized Nido Nutrition School Day to provide mothers and caregivers nutrition education for the optimal growth of their children. The programme is being run in selected schools nationwide in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service.

The first wave of the educational campaign was successfully organized in 2015. This reached 16 schools in the Greater Accra, Northern, Western and Ashanti Regions. During the event, mothers of pupils in selected lower and upper primary schools are educated on good nutrition and healthy lifestyle.

Currently, thirteen of such campaigns have been held in five regions for 2016 in five regions with four schools from Brong Ahafo, Ashanti, three from Greater Accra, two each from Eastern and Western regions and one from the Northern region.

Activity at the Aboom AME Zion B/C Primary School in Cape Coast Region covered other cluster of schools and the winner of the Nutrition Education competition was Madam Monica Agyare Ampomaa, parent of a class 2 pupil.

Through the event, mothers are offered the opportunity to learn about good nutrition through drama, interactive games and dancing. They learn about balanced diets, the importance of breakfast, and the health benefits of having iron, calcium and vitamins in right amounts in their diets.

These essential micronutrients which help to fight micronutrient deficiencies prevalent in our region are found in Nido - The nutrition education component of all the activities is endorsed by a Nutritionist from the University of Ghana.

A contest is organized during each event and an ultimate scholarship package of GHS 500 is given to the winning duo (mother or caregiver and child). The prize package is intended to provide financial support for the next academic term or school reopening, usually in September.

Nestlé has made a global commitment to help reduce the risk of under nutrition through micronutrient-fortification and aims to reach 200 billion annual servings of micronutrient-fortified foods and beverages worldwide by 2016. In the Central and West Africa Region, Nestlé provided its consumers with 58 billion daily servings of micronutrient-fortified foods and beverages in 2015.
