Actors producing own movies have become a norm in the country in recent times. Names like Vivian Jill Lawrence, Yvonne Okoro, Rose Mensah aka Kyeiwaa, Yvonne Nelson, Prince David Osei, Van Vicker, Ellen Kyei White and few others hurriedly come to mind when listing actors who have ventured into movie production.
One actor who has made up his mind not to produce movie now is Kumawood star boy, Bill Asamoah. The Kumasi-based actor arrived at this decision after his first self-produced movie; “Sorry My Love” did not accomplish his desire result.
He said “the movie sold alright but the marketer didn’t keep to his promise of paying us what we are due and is still owing us as I’m talking to you now.”
Speaking to Zionfelix.com, the 2016 Kumawood brand ambassador disclosed that “producing a movie is not an easy task and if care is not taken, one will not make profit because the marketers and distributors end up taking all the money from the producers all in the guise of paying hugely for commercials played on TV and the cost involved in post production.”
The president of Ghana Actor’s Guild, Kumasi chapter advised that prospective producers should seek business advise from qualified people and also get business plans. He told them to sign contracts with distributors as well as marketers so they don’t get cheated like himself.
When asked about the way forward for the movie industry, he answered that associations in the film industry must learn to respect each other in order to help them grow together since stakeholders depend on each other to survive.
Bill Asamoah further called on the Film Producers Association Of Ghana, FIPAG to respect the code of ethics they agreed with Ghana Actors’ Guild in April 2013.
He also advised Kumawood producers to explore and take advantage of the internet to sell their movies. Bill added that they should inculcate the habit of premiering their movies instead of relying solely on CD sales.
Mr. Asamoah talking about his career said he is currently focused on his education and acting job so he has little room for distractions.
Bill Asamoah’s “Sorry My Love” which was supported by Kwaku Twumasi and the late Eric Asante featured stars like Nana Ama McBrown, Okyeame Kwame, Akosua Fosuah, Mavis Adjei, Kwaku Twumasi, Bill Asamoah and many others.
