Assembly Members Warned Not To Attend Meetings B'cuz Of Allowances

Mr David Yaro, Chief Director of the Western Regional Co-ordinating Council (WRCC), on Friday urged assembly members to be serious with their work since they played a vital role in national development. �Your role in the various assemblies is very sensitive and vital for the total development of the average Ghanaian hence laziness on your part could create misunderstanding between the people and central government,� he said. Mr Yaro was speaking at a two-day capacity building workshop for assembly members in the Prestea-Huni Valley District. He said the assembly members should not only see their duty as attending meetings to take allowances but they should appreciate the magnitude of their work in ensuring that government policies got to the grassroots. Mr Yaro said the workshop was to equip members on important areas of their duties and urged those who were already doing well to improve upon it. Topics to be discussed include; �The Role and Functions of the Assembly Members,� �The Legislative Framework for Local Governance� and �The Functions of MMDAs�. He said the topics have been carefully selected to ensure that each member left the workshop fully equipped and ready to work more efficiently. The District Chief Executive of Prestea-Huni Valley, Mr Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, urged all assembly members to put political differences aside and work together towards a common goal. He assured them of the assembly�s support in ensuring that their work was made easy and also promised to reward hardworking assembly members at the end of the year. The District Co-ordinating Director, Alhaji Hardi, reiterated the importance of capacity building in the attainment of performance results and appealed to government to provide the necessary training and logistics to help the assembly to equip its members.
