Police Retrieve Three Rifles From Tamale Lorry Station

The Police in the Northern Region have retrieved three AK 47 assault rifles, three magazines and 160 pieces of live ammunition at the Sankpala lorry station in Tamale.

The arms and ammunition are believed to have been abandoned by a member of one of the factions in the protracted chieftaincy dispute at Portor, near Kintampo, in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The rifles and the ammunition, which were concealed in a bag of rice, are believed to have been abandoned by the suspect, Dapaah Jabuni, when he sensed that he was being monitored.

Jabuni, however, managed to flee from the lorry park.

Briefing

The Deputy Northern Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Edward Akrofi-Oyirifi, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Tamale yesterday, said the suspect, now at large, was believed to have procured two of the rifles from Chereponi in the Northern Region and one at Bawku in the Upper East Region ostensibly to reignite the chieftaincy conflict in Portor.

According to ACP Akrofi-Oyirifi, there had been intermittent clashes between the Bawa and the Chawuchawu gates in the chieftaincy dispute at Portor for some time now and  the suspect was said to be one of the prime architects behind the conflict and a member of one of the factions in the  dispute.

He said the suspect was also on the wanted list of the Kintampo Police for being the brain behind the conflict in the town.

ACP Akrofi-Oyirifi said the operation to arrest the suspect was a  collaboration between the Northern Regional Police Command and the Kintampo Division.
