CI For November 7 Polls To Be Laid Before Parliament By End Of June

Parliament is yet to receive the Constitutional Instrument(CI) that will facilitate the conduct of this year’s elections on November 7, according to the Vice Chair of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary affairs, George Loh.

The CI is expected to change Ghana’s election date from December 7 to November 7.

Although the Election Management Body has assured that it will be able to meet the November deadline, there are fears that any delay in this piece of legislation will thwart the country’s effort in holding its November 7 polls as planned by the EC.

However, Mr. George Loh said he expects the CI to be laid before parliament latest by the end of this month.

“It has to go through two gazetting. The second one is supposed to have expired sometime this week. After that within ten days it has to come to parliament;we are hopeful that by the end of June it would have come to parliament.”

Meanwhile the opposition NPP says Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary polls proposed by the Electoral Commission (EC) for November 7, 2016, may not come off considering the backlog of the necessary activities to be undertaken prior to voting.

They’ve argued that the EC is behind schedule and must revert to the old date.
