Accra Floods: The Mayor Must Go - PPG

The Professional Patriots of Ghana (PPG) is calling for the removal of the Accra mayor, Dr. Alfred Okoe Vandapuije for failing to stop the Accra floods.

After years and years of failed promises, the time has come for Dr. Okoe Vandapuije to be shown the exit since his stay in office would be tantamount to perennially crucifying the people of Accra.

We recall with great sorrow the June 3rd disaster that befell the country,it was our belief that after that disaster there was no reason for the city to flood again. Taking our belief from the speeches of the president of Ghana and officialdom during the disaster. But the trust has been breached.

In December 2014, a French court jailed Mr. Rene Marratier, mayor of La Faute-sir-Mer,a village in France, for a flood that killed 29 people. In contrast,in 2015 death toll of Accra flood was well over 200 and the mayor is not only walking freely, he is still at post and has presided over yet another deadly flood. He must go now!

We have made a careful analysis of the flood situation in Accra as a professional group and have come to the conclusion that the main cause of the problem is official inept, negligence and total disregard for human life and dignity.

Given the opportunity, we as a professional body would be able to put a perpetual stop to this problem within three months,it’s mind baffling therefore that it has taken officialdom years without solution after spending huge sums of monies under the pretext of tackling the problem.

Floods in Accra dates back to 1958 and has occurred in different regimes, however, the difference between the other regimes and the current regime is that the formerly proffered solutions albeit inadequate.

For instance in the year 2003, it took one of the regimes to stop one of Accra’s most dangerous flood-prone areas from flooding, i.e. by constructing the Alajo drains at Alajo and its surrounding areas. This is a foresight by past leaders which is lacking in the current crop of leadership.

In this regard, we call on the mayor of Accra to resign or in the alternative be sacked by the president.

PPG sympathizes with well-meaning Ghanaians who have lost their loved ones and properties in this avoidable disaster, there is hope in the future. But not until Okoe Vandapuije has been shown the exit.
