School Feeding Program Should Come Under GES

A former employee of the Agriculture Development Bank (ADB) in Kumasi, Madam Agnes Cobbina, has expressed the need for the School Feeding Programme module of the National Youth Employment Programmed (NYEP) to be handled by the Ghana Education Service (GES), for effective implementation. She explained that an evaluation of the feeding programme under the government reveals that it is not properly managed. Speaking to The Chronicle in an interview, she said unqualified matrons are employed at the various stages of the feeding programmed which has retarded the programme. Madam Cobbina stressed that some caterers combines more than three clusters with their wives spearheading it, assisted by illiterate cooks, without supervision by qualified matrons. She hinted that qualified matrons from the various polytechnics in the country are found all over the country and engaged in the operation of fried rice joints, who can occupy the various vacancies for the proper running of the programme. Matrons from GES should be dispatched to man the feeding programme at the various primary schools to ease congestion of more than three matrons at a particular Senior High School, she suggested. She noted that the unscrupulous caretakers of the feeding programme have made if difficult for the activities of the staff to be monitor, hence the need for it to be under GES. According to her, enrollment in various schools has soared, hence the need to adequately compensate the matrons to manage the feeding programme to impart positively on the beneficiaries.
