Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE indicates that some daring armed robbers last Saturday blocked the Aborso-Dedesewirako Road in the Fantweakwa District of the Eastern Region with logs, attacked and robbed the passengers on board four cars and several motorbikes.
Fanteakwa District Chief Executive (DCE), Fuseini Abass-Sbaabe, said the armed robbers, numbering about 10, launched the attack.
According to him, they stopped a vehicle carrying leading members of New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Fanteakwa North, robbed them of their monies, mobile phones and other valuable items.
He said the armed robbers forced them to lie prostrate on the floor for about 30 minutes and waited for more victims.
Mr. Abass-Sbaabe confirmed that the vehicle carrying a casket and mourners was initially attacked by the armed robbers.
“That was the dead whose funeral was attended by both NDC and NPP members at Odotorm. The driver of the hearse was robbed of his money and so were other passengers of the vehicle,” he added.
“Both the NDC and NPP executives were coming from the same funeral at Odortom. The deceased was an NPP member and the brother of a staunch NDC man and so members of the parties were there to sympathize with the bereaved families.
“There was another vehicle belonging to some Indian investors. NDC’s campaign van appeared on the scene which seemed to be the final target. There was gunshot from an unknown destination when the armed robbers were approaching the NDC’s vehicle. They concluded that the gunshot came from the NDC’s vehicle and so they fired several bullets into the vehicle to break any resistance.
DAILY GUIDE’s checks indicated that the four passengers took cover in the vehicle to avoid the bullets.
According to the driver of the vehicle (name withheld), about 20 shots were fired at the NDC vehicle.
He stated that “when the armed robbers didn’t find any resistance coming from the vehicle, they got closer, ordered them out and emptied their pockets. Four people sustained severe gunshot wounds. The robbers then allowed the NDC’s van to leave the spot to send people to the hospital since they were seriously hurt.”
The NPP executives, including the constituency secretary, Charles Oware Tweneboah, popularly known as Sir COT and Desmond Bempong, the Deputy Youth Organizer of NPP, continued to lie on the floor, as the wounded in the NDC vehicle were ordered to leave.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that the NDC’s vehicle, whose tires were damaged, couldn’t travel but the NPP members conveyed them to Begoro District Hospital.
They are currently receiving treatment at the facility.
The armed robbers, after embarking on their mission, escaped through the bush.
The Begoro Police Command has launched investigations into the matter.
