African Reform Movement Receives Registration Certificate

The African Reform Movement (ARM) has been presented with a provisional certificate by the Electoral Commission (EC), to enable it to take part in the November 2016 Election.

The certificate is in partial fulfillment of the Political Parties Act, 2000 (Act 574) (Section 8, Subsection 2) and signed by Mr Amadu Sulley, the Deputy Chairman (Operations) of the EC.

According to the ceritificate; “This is to certify that the EC has presented the ARM with a provisional certificate of registration as a political party on this day, Monday, 20th June, 2016.”

The ARM, which is a new party on Ghana’s political landscape, was founded by Dr Nii Amu Darko, a Medical Practitioner in Australia, which aims to advocate for a complete change of Ghana’s Constitution.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Dr Darko said: “The fundamental problem of Ghana is not John Mahama, it’s not Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo … it is the Constitution. It is a very flawed document.”

Citing some examples of the perceived flaws, he noted that the Constitution is discretional and has given presidents too much power.

“We are going to point out to Ghanaians why the misrule is so pervasive, why it is actually endemic. It is because the Constitution allows all these things to happen,” he said.
