Vigilante Groups Won't Be Tolerated In Nov Polls - Deputy Interior Mins

Deputy Minister for Interior, James Agalga has warned political vigilante groups won't be tolerated in the November general elections.

He said the Ministry has issued a directive to all political parties to disband their vigilante groups since it is illegal.

He noted that the groups heighten tensions in the country.

Mr. Agalga issued this warning at the 'Government for the People Forum' held in Bolgatanga of the Upper East Region.

He said the Ministry and government are aware of the potential violence that's likely to be stirred by the vigilante groups in the wake of the November polls.

A National Election Security Task Force has been established by the Ghana Police Service in every region to monitor any violent acts in the lead-up to the elections; he further disclosed.

"There is evident to suggest that tensions are rising in the country in the build-up to this year's elections. Government has therefore demonstrated it is committed to the peace and security in the country by issuing a directive to all political parties to dissolve all vigilante groups

"To ensure there is free and fair elections, government has asked the police administration to establish national election security task force to deal with the security aspect of the elections," he said.

"Political vigilante groups have no role to play in these elections and I plead with the political parties to dissolve them immediately for a peaceful election 2016", he added.

The Deputy Interior Minister also called on all security agencies to scale up their efforts in to deal with anybody who attempts to hold the nation to ransom.
