Falling Boulders: Aburi-Accra Road Closed Till Nov

Following Class91.3FM’s #Waiting Disaster series, the Ghana Highway Authority will today Monday June 27 close the south-bound lane of the Peduase Lodge-Ayi Mensah road for five months for repair works.

Class FM’s #Waiting Disaster series revealed the danger the falling sedimentary rocks posed to road users.

Class FM’s Ridwan Karim Dini Osman, who visited the scene on Monday 6 June, 2016, reported that the section of the mountain with the boulder consisted of rocks with visible cracks. He said particles of the rock were wearing off as residue could be seen just below the mountain.

According to him, water was gushing out from the base of the mountain, which could weaken that section, and make it easier for the boulder to tumble to the streets. He said the size of the boulder could block both lanes of the highway, should it fall, which would make it impossible for motorists to use the road.

He also revealed that road signs had been placed at the junction to warn motorists of the situation, but judging from the inscription, it did not look like a warning sign from the Ministry of Roads and Highways, but from a company, which did so out of benevolence.

He explained that the signs had no reflectors, making them invisible at night, while drivers were not even complying with the warning to drive in the outer lane.

The Ghana Highway Authority had earlier issued a statement announcing the closure on Wednesday June 22 to November 19, 2016, but was postponed to today, 27 June, 2016.

Motorists have, therefore, been advised to use the Kitase-Berekuso road as an alternative route and follow directional signs to ensure safe execution of works on the road.
