As part of its annual 21 Days of Y’ello Care, MTN staff volunteers led by the CEO Mr. Ebenezer Twum Asante and Executives visited the Nsawam Prison to donate computers and also fumigate the prison cells.

The donations was to support in the ICT training of the inmates and to ensure they are equipped with requisites skills for transitions into society after they serve their term. Volunteers also fumigated the prison cells to free it of bird bugs and other insects. The staff volunteers used the opportunity to interact with the inmates in their classrooms, encouraged them and also gave them opportunity to ask questions.

To mark this year’s edition of 21 Days of Y’ello Care which is operating under the theme “Investing in Education for All”, MTN staff volunteers across the country have for the past 21 days embarked on projects aimed at enhancing education and also inculcating Information and Communications Technology (ICT) into teaching and learning.

Speaking on the support extended to the prisons, the CEO of MTN Ghana Mr. Ebenezer Asante said we extended the support to the inmates to emphasis the importance of investing in education in the prisons because it leads to the successful rehabilitation inmates which enables them to acquire skills to enable acquires them a source of income after leaving prisons. “it equally important to commit resources and to give the inmates the hope of having a skill after they leave the prisons”.

The commander in charge of the Nsawam prisons Isaac Kofi Egyir expressed his gratitude to MTN staff and said the act was comforting, he said such donations and visits gives hope to inmates because it gives them the sense that they are not neglected by outside world. He appealed to other corporate institutions to emulate the examples of MTN.

As part of inculcating ICT into teaching and learning and staying committed to its vision of leading the delivery of a bold new digital world, MTN staff donated and set up a 10 seater computer lap for Dachio JHS in Upper East, Edwnease Rehabilitation center in Ashanti Region, St. Augustine Basic School in Ashiaman, Greater Accra region and Nana Nkestia Community Library in Western region.

MTN Ghana launched the 10th edition of its annual 21 Days of Y’ello Care employee volunteer initiative which takes place every June on the 1st of June 2016. During the period, MTN employees devote their time and resources in assisting communities to embark on significant development projects to enhance the communities in which MTN operates.

The ‘21 Days of Y’ello Care’ is a competition amongst MTN operations to secure the highest number of staff involved in volunteerism and initiating projects with remarkable impact. The country with the highest staff participation wins the prize money of $100,000 to be reinvested in community projects.

Since its inception in 2007, MTN Ghana remains the most awarded for volunteerism and projects, picking up the 2008 WECA (West and Central Africa) Regional award, overall Y’ello Care Challenge winners for years 2010 & 2011. Additionally, MTN Ghana won Y’ello Care ICT Project for 2013, Y’ello Care Innovation Project award for 2014 and Y’ello Care Integrity Award for 2015.
