Gregory Afoko Denied Bail Again

An Accra High Court on Tuesday dismissed a bail application by Gregory Afoko, a brother of suspended New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman; Paul Afoko, who’s facing trial for the murder of the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, Adams Mahama.

According to the court, presided over Justice LL Mensah, the decision was based on the fact the continuous stay in custody of the accused, was in the interest of the public and also to protect him from any attack.
Lawyers for Gregory Afoko at the last sitting of the court filed an application seeking for bail for their client.

In their application, the lawyers argued that, the client was not needed by the police for any further investigations, since the law enforcement agency had concluded all the necessary investigations and presented their issues before the court.

This application was opposed to by the prosecution in the case, who argued that, if the accused person is granted bail, he would not be available for the trial.

Gregory Afoko, is being held on the charges of conspiracy to commit crime and murder of the late Mr. Adams Mahama, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Upper East Regional Chairman.

He is accused of attacking the former NPP Chairman with acid, which led to his death. Afoko has pleaded not guilty in a court also constituting a seven-member jury.

In February, an Accra District Court committed Afoko to stand trial at the High Court to answer to the charges leveled against him.

The State during the committal proceedings, tendered 17 exhibits in respect of the trial, which included Afoko’s caution and charge statements as well as a post-mortem report of the deceased, conducted on November 25, 2016, by Dr. Lawrence Edusei, and  a medical report on the wife of the deceased, who also sustained injuries in her bid to assist the deceased when the incident occurred.
