Car Snatching On The Rise Police Warns

The Accra Regional Police Command is cautioning the general public to be weary with the growing incidence of car snatching within the region.

According to the command, numerous cases have been documented, which calls for precautionary and collaborative measures from both the public and police to deal with the growing threat.

ASP Effia Tenge, Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, stated in a press release that the growing crime was found to be lucrative at areas like East Legon, Mile 7, Pokuase, Adentan, Dansoman, Sakumono and the Spintex stretch.

She detailed that the criminals target both private and commercial vehicles, and mostly succeed in snatching those with trade-licensed plate DP or DV and taxis.

Educating the public on some of the methods employed by these criminals, the Accra Regional Police PRO stated that some of them just trail and snatch the vehicles their victims get to their entrances.

In another incident, she held that they also hire a cab and then attack the driver and flee with the car.

She also disclosed that in other cases, the criminals pretend they are interested in buying a car, and when it is given to them for a test drive, they run away with it.

ASP Tenge seized the opportunity to assure the general public that the police will   collaborate with the necessary key stakeholders in the transport industry and unions, carry out intelligence-led operations and also undertake periodic sensitisation campaigns to reduce the menace.

The Accra Regional Police PRO cautioned the public to use auto-mobile tracking devices and also stay vigilant.
