EC Charged To Ensure Transparent Polls

The leader of the Masjidul Bayaan Mosque in Tamale, Sheikh Ibrahim Iddrisu Basha, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to stand firm and work hard for  transparent and credible polls in November.

He said one could not wish away the 2012 Supreme Court Election Petition case and therefore the EC must do all it could to ensure  transparent and credible elections.

Sheikh Basha, who is also the chief Imam of the Masjidul Bayaan Mosque, made the call at a special prayer forming part of the end of this year’s Ramadan fasting and prayers at the Masjidul Bayaan Mosque in Tamale, the Northern Regional capital on Sunday.

Peaceful elections

The occasion was used to pray for the peace of the country before, during and after the elections and also to ask for Allah’s guidance for all stakeholders in the electoral process, especially the President, EC, the security agencies, the judiciary and the various political parties for peaceful  polls.

Appeal to President

Sheikh Basha also appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to do all he could to ensure that Ghana would go through the 2016 general election peacefully by emulating former President Rawlings and President Kufuor, his predecessors.

“I reiterate the call on President Mahama, his government and all Ghanaians that peace can never be achieved in the absence of truth, fairness and justice. All our prayers shall be in vain if we do not collectively stand firm for truth and justice,” Sheikh Basha stated.

Impartiality

The Muslim cleric also called on the various security agencies to continue to exhibit high sense of professionalism and be impartial in the discharge of their duties before, during and after the general elections to help protect the current peace and stability of the country.

He asked for God’s strength and support for the various security agencies and the judiciary whom he said had been sacrificing their lives for the administration of justice for the country and urged the judiciary to continue to dispense justice without fear or favour in these trying moments of the nation.

Northern Region

Sheikh Basha also asked for Allah’s blessings for the Northern Region and Ghana as a whole, saying “Our region is stricken with abject poverty which results in factional and ethnic conflicts as its ripple effects.
