NMC Engages Journos On Airwave Sanity

The National Media Commission (NMC) on Monday July 11, engaged journalists at the International Press Centre in Accra, on steps it is putting in place to ensure sanity on the airwaves before, during and after this year's elections.

The engagement with the media comes on the back of numerous calls on the NMC to check the use of bad language on the airwaves and to regulate the kind of content put out by the media.

Among the steps outlined by the NMC are engagement with media owners, chairman of the commission, Kwasi Gyan Appenteng said.

According to Class News’ Ridwan Karim Dini Osman, who was at the meeting, the NMC said with the support of the European Union, it had established two monitoring centres, one in the capital, Accra, and the other in the Ashanti region, where personnel monitor the various stations and what they do to ensure that they work within the remit of the law.

The NMC also said it has set up regional committees across the country, which do not only look at hate speech on the airwaves, but also look at how media platforms cover political events to ensure they give equal access to various political parties.

The NMC also said it was against the proposed ban on social media on Election Day. According to the commission, it will organise a forum to engage various stakeholders on the use of social media and how to make sure it does not mar the success of this year’s election. The NMC noted that peace ahead of, and after the elections, is a collective responsibility and called on media practitioners to strive for professionalism.
