Sacking Kojo Bonsull Set Bad Precedent Expert

The government of Ghana will be setting a bad example if it satisfies demands by the Kumasi Traditional Council, which has issued a seven-day ultimatum for the dismissal of Kumasi mayor Kojo Bonsu, a former presiding member of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Issaku Amon Kotei, has admonished.

“I believe some sanity will prevail if the executive will make a move because this will be a bad precedent and if we are not careful we are going to have a situation where traditional authorities will have to be directing the Executive, and that is not acceptable in our constitution,” he cautioned.

The Asanteman Council has told President John Mahama to fire the Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Municipal Assembly. The chiefs have refused to reverse an earlier decision for the mayor to be removed despite an unqualified apology rendered the council by Mr Kojo Bonsu.

The council is accusing the mayor of disrespecting it, hence, cannot work with him any longer and demands a replacement.

However, in an interview on Class FM’s Executive Breakfast Show with Prince Minkah on Tuesday July 12, the local government expert cautioned the president against bowing to the pressure of the chiefs.

He argued the executive must rather engage the traditional leaders and resolve the matter amicably.

“It is becoming a little difficult to manage but that is why we have experts in conflict management and resolution. It is becoming dangerous in our young democracy,” he noted.
