It has emerged that the 56,000 voters whose names were captured on the electoral roll with the National Health Insurance card as proof of Ghanaian citizenship, have been deleted in compliance with the Supreme Court’s order. Sources close to the Commission confirmed this to Citi News after an Inter-party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held in Accra today [Tuesday].
Citi News’ Sixtus Don Ullo however reported that, the names of the affected persons will be published in the state Newspaper, Daily Graphic on Wednesday. Background In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court, on July 5, ordered the EC to take all the necessary steps to delete the list of 56,000 NHIS registrants it submitted to the court and other names of persons who registered with NHIS cards but were not included in the list it presented to the court.
This followed its May 5 ruling asking the EC to expunge from the current voters’ register the names of all persons who registered and voted in the 2012 elections, with the NHIS card as a proof of identity. The country’s apex court made the order in a case brought before it by former Nation Youth Organiser of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan and one Evans Nimako who were challenging the credibility of the voters’ register. The two, among other reliefs, wanted the current register declared inappropriate for the November polls. The July 5 ruling was a clarification of the court’s judgment on the voters register delivered on May 5, 2016.
