Teacher Assault: 2 Jailed, Pupil Remanded

The two suspects arrested in connection with the assault on teachers at the St. John’s 1&2 Primary at Accra New Town have been handed 12-month and six-month sentences by an Accra Magistrate Court on Tuesday July 11.

This followed attacks on some teachers of the school by cane- and knife-brandishing thugs, who besieged the school’s premises to avenge a 15-year-old Class Five female pupil, who was punished by one of the teachers on June 7.

The school was closed down temporarily for two weeks following the incident and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) asked teachers in schools in the vicinity to boycott classes in solidarity with their colleagues.

School activities, however, resumed Wednesday June 22 and the teachers were compensated.

Greater Accra Regional Secretary of GNAT Le-Roy Levi McNara, who spoke with Class News, revealed that the pupil at the centre of the incident had also been charged and remanded at the borstal centre in Osu.

“She was charged on one count of conspiracy to commit crime. She pleaded guilty to it and she, being a minor, has been referred to the juvenile court for sentencing. I understand the juvenile court sits only on Thursdays and has been remanded to the borstal institution which the police tells me,” he said.
