Two people are reported dead with several others injured when a bus they were traveling on from Takoradi to Accra got involved in an accident at Komenda-Sefwi near Elmina in the Central Region on Thursday around 5am.
The duo were going to the Parliament of Ghana to listen to the Minister of Finance, Seth Terkper, whom they thought had been scheduled to appear before the House to answer to questions relating to the closure of the West African Mills Company (WAMCO) when they met their untimely death.
A military ambulance traveling from Accra to Takoradi, had a head-on collision with the 23-seater sprinter bus the duo was traveling on after trying to overtake another vehicle in a curve.
The duo, who are yet to be identified, are part of the 22 staff members of the company who have been home for the past 28 months following the closure of the cocoa processing plant which is a subsidiary of the Cocoa Processing Company (CPC).
MP for Takoradi, Kwabena Okyere Darko, whose constituency the facility is located had filed a question wanting to know from the Finance Minister “when the Cocoa Processing Company, West Africa Mills (1&2), Takoradi, will re-open for operation after twenty-eight months of closure”.
The question was pre-advertised in Wednesday’s, July 13, 2016, Order Paper and was expected to have been programmed for Thursday, July 14, 2016 but to no avail.
MP for Takoradi who was saddened by the incident informed the Speaker about the unfortunate incident when the House commenced sittings on Thursday.
He prayed to the House to help him support the families whose relatives perished in the accident.
Majority Chief Whip, Mohammed Mubarak-Muntaka, who was saddened by the accident told the House that there was a communication from Seth Terkper, that he could not attend the House but attempts to reach the Takoradi MP inform him about the absence of the Finance Minister proved futile.
The MP’s mobile handset, Muntaka noted, was either switched off or out of coverage area.
Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho, commenting on the issue told the Members that he has received assurances from the Finance Minister that he would appear before the House on either “on Monday or Tuesday to respond to the question”.
He extended the House’s condolences to the bereaved the family and wished those injured speedy recovery.
