NDC Opens Nominations For Abuakwa North Constituency

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is expected to open nominations for interested persons to replace the parliamentary candidate for Abuakwa North constituency in the Eastern region.

Anthony Gyima has stepped down four months to the general elections.

It is not clear what led to the decision by Mr. Gyimah to step down.

Reports, however, indicate that Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Victor Smith is likely to contest the seat on the ticket of the NDC.

Ambassador Smith lost to the late MP, JB Dankwa-Adu in the 2012 general elections.

But the Eastern Regional Secretary of the party, Mark Oliver Kevor said his decision to step down was a personal one.

He however denied reports that his decision was to pave way for Ambassador Smith to contest the seat.

“As a democratic party, we are not selective when it comes to persons who want to contest. We give room for everyone and so his decision to step down was not to give room for Ambassador Smith to contest but on a personal reason,” he stated.

He said nominations for a new candidate to replace Mr. Gyimah will open from Wednesday, July 20 to Friday July 22.
