Shrines Are Not Fetish, Lumor Modza

Lumor Boys Modza II, Nungua Krowor Gonti has called on natives of Nungua especially Christians to stop referring to the town’s 99 gods as fetish.

Lumor Modza in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday said “our gods and shrines are not meant for fetish activities but rather temples where we fast and pray for answers”.

He lamented that instead of seeing the activities of shrines as sources and embodiment of traditions and culture, some people would prefer to attach fetishism to them.

He explained that just as there were fake churches operating in the country, there could be some evil doing in other shrines but branding all traditional shrines as fetish was unfair to the traditionalist.

Lumor Modza also called on natives of Nungua to unite as one people to be able to demand the needed development from government.

He stated that due to unnecessary divisions among the people, the town was not receiving the needed socio-economic development.

Meanwhile, to end this year’s Kple festival, traditional leaders of Nungua have performed the necessary rituals for the Krowe shrine.

The rituals which were supposed to be performed every seven years were abandoned over 20 years ago which according Lumor Modza, could said be the cause of divisions and some problems in the area.

He explained that the rituals involved sending a cow into the sea and back three times after which it was slaughtered at the Krowe shrine.

Various dishes are then prepared with the beef and served to natives who ate at the shrine.

He warned that taking a piece of the meat from the shrine to the town would bring bad omen to the people of Nungua.
