Check Your Prostate State Regularly, Men Urged

Dr Daniel Abeka, a medical officer at the Tarkwa Government Hospital, has urged men who are over 40 years to undertake regular prostate cancer check-ups for early detection.

He said those with family history of the disease ought to make frequent checks in order to seek early treatment before complication sets in.

He said symptoms of the disease include difficulty in passing urine and frequent urination.

Dr Abeka, who said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, explained that the Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) or Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests were the best and easiest way of detecting prostate cancer.

He said although the disease was not painful, having regular check-up and tests was the best option for one to know his/her status.

The medical officer said prostate cancer is one of the most devastating diseases killing men worldwide, adding that one out of every five men could suffer from the disease.

He warned against excessive alcohol intake as it exacerbates a prostate condition.
