The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana is not well-prepared to organise this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections, but is only pretending to be ready for the polls, Martin Adjei Mensah-Kosah, Director of Elections for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said.
According to him, events at the EC give credence to the party’s observation that the EC is “disorganised”.
On Thursday, the proposed change of the election date from December 7 to the first Monday of November in an election year was shot down by parliament when the Constitutional Amendment Bill was rejected although the EC had indicated its preparedness to organise the polls in November.
Prior to parliament’s rejection of the date change, the election management body was ordered by the Supreme Court of Ghana to take steps to delete names of persons who registered using the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card as proof of identification and allow them to re-register. An order the EC was forced to comply with after the court re-emphasised its earlier orders it gave on May 5.
But Mr Mensah-Korsah said told Class 91.3FM’s Inside Politics programme on Thursday July 21 that the EC has demonstrated that it is in disarray as far as holding the December polls is concerned.
