Rent Control Locks Up Offices �As CLOGSAG Strike Bites, Tenants Angry
Hundreds of complainants who visited the Rent Control Department near Tema Station in Accra were yesterday angry and disappointed because the offices were locked up due to the biting strike by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG).
According to the angry customers, officers of the department gave them notices and dates to appear for adjudication of cases or in some instances settlement, but they met empty offices.
As at 7 am yesterday, there were more than hundred people at the premises stranded. The department had on its notice board the inscription ‘CLOGSAG Strike, the fight for Interim Premium Allowances is on.’
According to the notice, the strike began on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 and will persist until further notice.
When Daily heritage got to the premises of the regional office of the department near the Tema Station, the main gate to the building was locked up with padlock with red flags hanged around the premises.
Speaking to the paper in an interview, Mr. Eric Siame, a complainant told the paper that they came to the department on June 29 last month and were told to reappear yesterday only to get there to meet their absence.
Mr. Siame said what worried him was the fact that he travelled all the way from Ablekuma and hoped to have his case settled.
A middle-aged woman from Nungua, Naa Ashorkor said two weeks ago when she came to the department they gave her yesterday to hear her case.
“From what is happening now, I don’t know when they will call us again or resume from the strike. Only God knows what will happen in the house today,” she stated.
It would be recalled that CLOGSAG on July 27, 2016 intensified its strike action after what they described as government’s failure to include them in the processes of determining the Interim Premium.
“The national secretariat of CLOGSAG wished to state categorically that negotiations with government on Interim Premium have not been conclusive and because of that all our members nationwide should go on strike till further notice.”
