The Oda Magistrate Court has remanded two suspects into prison custody to re-appear on September 30, 2016, for the murder of a taxi driver at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region.
Sulemana Dauda, 20 and Joseph Arthur King, 20 were part of a three-man gang which attacked and murdered Eric Kofi Nartey, 42, a commercial taxi cab driver in the town. The third suspect, Emmanuel Kweku Adjei, 22, is on the wanted list of the Akim Oda Police.
According to the police they received information on Wednesday 27th July, 2016, at about 8:30pm, that a taxi driver had been killed in a house at Akim Oda Quarters.
According to a press release by the police in the region, personnel were dispatched to the scene and found the deceased lying beside his KIA Picanto taxi cab with registration number GW 9380 – 16.
The police said the deceased was rushed to the Oda Government Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the medical doctor.
Law enforcement officers indicated that their “investigations revealed that the deceased was hired by the three men to house number CB 50/2 located at Charles Oppong Road, Akim Oda, to pick some items from the house”.
“The only female tenant was then out of the house. The three men then hit him with a stick with the motive of collecting the taxi cab from him,” he continued.
However, in the course of their action, the deceased managed to scream and a mob rushed into the house but the assailants managed to escape.
The mob set the house ablaze with the view that the culprits were hiding in the house after all efforts made by the police to restrain them failed. Soldiers from Akim Achiase Base had to be deployed to the area to restore calm.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were called to put out the fire.
On Thursday 28th July, 2016, at about 9am, police managed to arrest the two, suspected to be accomplices to the crime.
They were then sent to court after which they were remanded. Investigations are ongoing to get the third accomplice arrested.
