Ghanas Health System Among The Best In The World - Dr Teye Nuertey

Ghana’s health sector has been considered among the best in the world by the Volta Regional Health Director, Dr. Joseph Teye Nuertey.

According to him, as compared to previous years where certain diseases like Guinea Worm, goitre and elephantiasis were rampant, these diseases have become a thing of the past since 2003.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Peacefmonline.com, Dr. Joseph Teye Nuertey emphatically mentioned that the introduction of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS)  shot the health system to the height of international standards.

We are no longer experiencing certain diseases which used to bother us. Since 2003, we have improved on our health system and I can say that Ghana’s health system is among the best in the world upon the introduction of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS)," he indicated.

He asserted that Ghana has completely eradicated guinea-worm which used to trouble the people from Northern Ghana and other diseases which were common among the people in the rural areas.

To him, Ghana can boast of a successful journey in terms of disease control and the general well-being of Ghanaians.

But quite recently, Flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, indicted the Mahama-led administration for re-trogressing the country’s health care system.

Our health system is really not a system because it is not working

Diseases that have been eradicated from our country have resurfaced; yellow fever, typhoid, yaws, scabies...all due to poor sanitation and incompetent governance,” Nana Konadu asserted.

Dr. Teye Nuertey, who stopped short of reacting to the former First Lady's comments, said in his general assessment of the country’s health sector, the government's readiness to fight any illness is resolute.
