Security Services Employ 27,000 Under YEA

A total of 27000 young men and women have successfully passed out under the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) programme into the various national security services.

The Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Baba Jamal noted that the YEA which targets 100,000 youth this year has so far recruited 27000 youth across the country.

Baba Jamal indicated that the agency seeks to recruit the youth for modules such as Community Policing, Agriculture, Fire service, Prisons Service, Immigration Service, Waste and Sanitation Management, Coastal Sanitation and Environmental Protection.

Others, he listed, are the Youth in Afforestation, Green Ghana, Community Education Teaching Assistant (CETA for both English and Arabic) and Community Health Worker (E-health.) He was speaking at the passing-out of third batch of Prison Assistants under the YEA in Accra.

“What you’ve seen today is the process. We are going to engage about 100,000 youth in the whole country. We are targeting about 70,000 youths to be engaged in Accra,” he stated.

He urged the youth to take advantage of the opportunity which has been redesigned by government to create jobs for them.

“Whether you have been to school or not, we are going to engage every youth across the country in various sectors of the economy,” he emphasized.

He explained that the criteria for selection depend on the requirements under each module which is open to HND and university graduates as well as those who have not acquired any formal education.

According to him, the mandate of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) is to coordinate, facilitate and create job modules for the unemployed youth in the country.

He posited that passing out the recruits forms the first part of the programme under the new Youth Employment Agency (YEA) which was established by Act 2015 (Act 887).

The YEA, which runs the programme yearly, has a legal backing with sources of funding to strongly sustain the project under any government regime.

“According to him, the agency is purely a public service institution which employs every Ghanaian without prejudice and discrimination against persons belonging to a particular group, tribe or political party.

This and many other modules are measures that government put in place to address the youth unemployment situation in the country,” he said.

He urged the new recruits to dedicate their time, knowledge and skills to community service because there is no greater reward that they can get in life than the satisfaction that comes from serving people and the country.

In a related development, 2,000 youth were passed out during the 4th batch of Fire assistants of the Ghana National Fire Service to assist in fighting fire outbreak in various communities.
