Mr John Alexander Ackon, the Ashanti Regional Minister, has called for teachers to find innovative ways of making the teaching of mathematics more interesting to students.
They should simplify things to ensure that the subject becomes easily understandable to school children.
Mr Ackon, who was addressing the 40th national conference of the Mathematical Association of Ghana, said the continued poor performance of students in the subject gave cause for concern.
He made reference to the 2015 West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) where 37 per cent of the candidates presented failed in mathematics, scoring grade ‘F’.
The trend, the Minister said, was not healthy, adding that it must be reserved.
‘Eliminating the phobia and improving performance in mathematics in schools: the role of stakeholders’ was the theme chosen for the meeting.
Mr Ackon said he had no doubt that every child was capable of learning mathematics, given the right environment, encouragement and good teaching methods.
He urged the association to develop new methods and approaches that would help to demystify the study of the subject to make it attractive to students.
He saluted the teachers for their efforts towards helping the nation to develop its human resource through mathematical research.
Professor Samuel Kwasi Asiedu Addo, the President of the association, advised his colleagues to have strong command of the subject they were teaching.
He appealed to the government to support them to undertake regular training programmes to upgrade the professional competence of the members for efficient classroom performance.
