Collapsed Building Kills Four

Four people died instantly last Friday when the two floor uncompleted Kingsway International Church building under which they were resting collapsed. Fire officials identified the dead as Susan Akua Atta, 52; Akos, 23; Yaw Asare, 26 and Bismark, four years. Miraculously, Yaw Yeboah, one-and-half-year-old son of Akos was rescued unhurt from the rubble and rushed to the Tema General Hospital for examination. A steel bender working on top of the building also escaped unhurt. Mr. Prince Anaglate, Public Relations officer of the Tema Regional Ghana National Fire Service, told the Times newspaper that the same structure collapsed four years ago killing two people. He said the women who died on Friday, were selling under the building while Bismark had probably gone to buy food when the incident happened. Mr Anaglate said that at about 11.26a.m, the GNFS received a distress call that the building had collapsed trapping five people. He said police rushed to the scene and with the help of two bulldozers to remove the concrete slabs to retrieve the bodies. He said officials of the Ghana Ambulance Service after examination pronounced them dead and the bodies were conveyed to the Tema General Hospital morgue. Mr Anaglate said a close examination of the rubble revealed that it contained more sand than cement. He used the opportunity to advise developers to lodge their building plans with the GNFS so that they will give them constructional advise and certify them before construction begins.
