The Ghana Football Association chief claims that the national team players represent the country for the love of money to secure their future

Ghana Football Association vice president George Afriyie, who doubles as the Black Stars management committee chairman, says national team players don’t play for pride but for money.

The Black Stars winning bonuses have been reviewed from $8000 to $12,000, which has been widely criticised in the country, but Afriyie thinks the players have a future to protect.

“Money motivation is huge in terms of African players and one must take it or leave it. I’m saying it today on your network and any player in the Black Stars who believes that I'm lying should come out and dispute it,” Afriyie told Nhyira FM.

“I‘m happy we were privileged to watch [former Ghana international] Osei Kofi and the rest, if we didn’t watch them, we've heard what they did for the country by winning many titles.

“Why are they still crying after their sacrifice for the country? Some of them are struggling in life now and the footballers of today are watching and learning from such situations.

“If anyone tells you the current players of the Ghana team are playing because of love and passion for the country then is a big lie.

“Last time, I overheard [Mubarak] Wakaso's interview in the media when he admitted that the Black Stars do not play for money. I cautioned him that next time that he says such things and later complains about unpaid winning bonuses, we won’t give him his money," he added.

Ghana, after confirming their qualification to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, will host Rwanda in the last round of matches of the qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 3.
