NDCs Massive Projects Threaten Suhum Lawmaker's Seat

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed confidence of unseating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) legislator occupying the Suhum Constituency seat following mass development projects and social intervention schemes launched by government in the area.

Executives of the NDC say their confidence to capture the seat held by the opposition for nearly two decades government has been boosted by both ongoing and completed development projects initiated to improve living conditions of ordinary people and narrowing the income inequality gap.

Their chances to win the seat hands down and break the voting jinx has largely been ascribed to the hard work and insightful leadership of the Suhum Municipal Chief Executive, Madam Margaret Ansei, popularly called Magoo.

Madam Ansei, who is also the NDC parliamentary for the constituency, in an interaction with journalists expressed joy that voters are happy with the progress made about infrastructure expansion and social intervention schemes launched in the constituency.

She highlighted some major projects in the Municipality as quality education and health, for the past few months that she assumed office.

In a move to boost quality teaching and learning, she said, a six-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities for Brong Densuso, Okonam, Ghanata and Akorabo Islamic Primary School, has been constructed.

She also mentioned the building of 18-unit classroom block and provision of a 33-seater bus for Suhum Presbyterian Senior High School, as an attempt to bring quality education to the door steps of communities in the area.

A three-unit classroom block for the people of Mile 44, Amede, Kofigya and Metremano. Magoo, she said have also been constructed, in addition to two classroom blocks for the people of Okonam, Akote, and the provision of 200 dual desks for a number of schools.

As part of efforts to improve transportation in the constituency, Madam Ansei said it applied asphalt on the seven- km Suhum township roads with pavement blocks from Okorase, Sutesco, and independent road through Mile 44 to Adarkwa.

She stated that most major roads that link villages to Suhum township has been reshaped and made motorable for easy conveyance of goods and services to cities.

More than 16 mechanised boreholes for Kpladey, Koko junction, Addo Nkwanta, Ahhafi, Akropongfunu, Akorabo and other communities have been constructed in a quest to provide potable drinking water for the people, she said.

“I have also fixed street lights throughout the entire Suhum township, to help avoid criminal activities in the town,” she said.

Madam Ansei said more than 1,360 elderly and young people have been registered on the National Health Insurance Scheme.

She said scores of CHPS compounds have been constructed for the people of Aponoapono and Abisim Dawa where there were challenges with health centres and access to service delivery for years.

The Suhum Constituency in Eastern Region, since 2004 has been a battleground for both NDC and the NPP.

In 2004 parliamentary election, NPP obtained 21,720 while NDC polled 17,125 but in 2008, NPP garnered 17,461, while NDC secured 15,824.

The NDC closed the range in 2012 gathering 23,658 votes (48.49 per cent) with the NPP candidate winning by 24,046 votes (49.28 per cent).

NDC executives expressed confident that the constituents would vote massively for the party’s parliamentary candidate and substantially for their presidential hopeful, President John Dramani Mahama, owing to its unmatched development record.

Gender advocates say Madam Ansei ability to snatch the parliamentary seat would be victory for women in politics and democracy.
