Residents in Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis and its adjourning towns in the Western Region would have to brace themselves for a looming water crisis predicted by the Water Ministry to hit the region by close of December 2016.
According to a director at the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the ministry through the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) will by close of December 2016, shut down the Daboase Water Treatment Plant which supplies treated water to the people of the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis.
Today’s checks at the national offices of GWCL indicated that the closure of the Daboase Treatment Plant has become imminent due to activities of illegal mining in the Pra River which is the main source of raw water that feeds the plant.
Today further learnt that the level of pollution of the Pra River by activities of galamsey (illegal mining) operators have reached a crescendo which, if not checked, will permanently ground the plant.
“We are currently monitoring to see whether to shut it down even before the December deadline just to prevent it from total collapse,” an engineer reiterated.
He noted that the pumps were made to treat water-temerity level of 200 units, but currently the temerity level of the Pra River was as high as 3,800 units.
