Outgoing Presby Moderator Rev. Prof Martey Explains Kpokpogbligbli

Outgoing Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey has explained what kpokpogbligbli means. Kpokpogbligbli was first mentioned in court by Alistair Tairo Nelson, one of the two Montie FM panellists, as the disease that caused him to vent his spleen on the Supreme Court judges.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday, August 30, Rev Martey said kpokpogbligbli is a word with its etymology in two Ga words – kpokpo and gbligbli. Kpokpo, he explains, means shake in Ga while gbligbli means “violently” or “vigorously”. “So, kpokpogbligbli is the vigorous, violent shaking of the body.” The outspoken church leader said the disease of one of the Montie 3 will, therefore, be from an evil spirit “because human beings created in the image of God, you can’t be in that position”.

He said persons suffering from such diseases must be taken to pastors for healing just as Jesus did as recorded in the gospel of Mark. Rev Prof Martey also denied claims he is in bed with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying as a “complex” and “full” professor, he cannot sell his conscience to a political party. “Maybe those who say I am NPP, they pay my dues.” He said attempts have been made by some politicians to gag him but he has been resolute.
