One of the health training institutions in the Central Region, St. Andrew College of Healthcare, has taken a swipe at the Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC) for labelling the school as “fake.”
And as a result of that, the school has started a legal action against the NMC to stop it from categorising the school as a fake institution.
The school, which is situated at the Assin Central constituency, according to the authorities of the school, is bent on dealing legally with the NMC unless it renders an unqualified apology to them.
It would be recalled that NMC last week published a list of nursing training institutions in the country that do not have accreditation, and thus have to cease operations.
But speaking in an interview with the media in Accra yesterday, Director of the school, Dr. Richard Asiedu, contended that “the NMC has no right to malign my institution which is not under the NMC but under the National Vocational and Technical Institute (NVTI) in Accra.”
Dr. Asiedu recalled that two years ago, NMC orchestrated a similar action, albeit listing his health institution among institutions that were operating without accreditation from the Nurses and Midwife Council.
“We cannot take this when they listed our institution two years ago, we prompted them that we were not under the NMC but our accreditation is from the National Vocational Technical Institute (NVTI),” which is under the manpower training department of the Ministry of Manpower and Labour Relations, he told Accra-based Joy FM.
“We run one of the health modules of the NVTI and not that of the NMC.
“…we felt they were going to do the honourable thing by stopping their illegal act of publishing our institution again. So why is the NMC misbehaving like this?” he questioned.
According to him, he felt scandalised with “enormous embarrassment” by the act, adding that “we have no option than to head to court. I have instructed my lawyers to begin the process and we have to stop them from perpetrating further wrongs against us.”
Meanwhile a source close to the owner of the school has hinted Today that the move was an orchestration by some sympathisers of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to tarnish the hard- earned reputation of the proprietor of the school.
Today learnt that Dr. Asiedu was one of the formidable aspirants in the run-up to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in the Assin Central constituency.
But he stepped down for the current parliamentary aspirant who is also the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area.
